What now?

Emergency Dentist FAQs

1) What counts as a dental emergency?
Pain that's hard to ignore, visible swelling, a suspected abscess or infection, a tooth that came out, a chip or crack that goes deep, bleeding that won't stop, or any injury to the mouth. If something feels wrong, call us.
2) Can you see me the same day?
We treat dental emergencies as a priority and do everything we can to get you in the same day. If full treatment has to wait, we make sure you're out of pain and know exactly what the next step is. We're not far from Springfield—call us when it matters.
3) Should I call or book online?
Online booking is fine for most situations. If the pain is severe, you're swollen, you've lost a tooth, or there's been facial trauma, call us directly—we can start triaging you over the phone.
4) What should I do if my tooth is knocked out?
The sooner the better. Pick the tooth up by the crown, not the root. Give it a gentle rinse if it's dirty, try to place it back in the socket, and if that's not working, drop it in milk or tuck it in your cheek and call us right away.
5) What should I do if I have swelling or think I have an infection?
Swelling needs attention fast—don't sit on it. Cold compress on the outside, nothing on the gums, and if swelling is moving toward your throat or you're having trouble breathing, skip our office and go straight to the ER.
6) What if I have a broken tooth or cracked tooth?
Be careful not to bite down on that tooth and call us as soon as you can. We'll look at what's broken and figure out the right way to protect what's left.
7) What if my crown or filling fell out?
Avoid using that tooth and keep the area as clean as you can. If you've still got the crown, hold onto it. Give us a call and we'll let you know what to bring in.
8) Will I need a root canal or an extraction?
Not necessarily. We'll do a proper exam and take images to see what's actually going on before recommending anything. If the tooth can be saved, we'll try to save it.
9) Do I need antibiotics?
Only if it's genuinely needed. Antibiotics alone don't fix dental infections—you still have to deal with the source. We prescribe them when they actually help, not as a first reflex.
10) How much does an emergency visit cost?
The cost depends on how involved the visit ends up being—exam, x-rays, and treatment all factor in. We'll go over the numbers with you before starting so you're not caught off guard.
11) Do you take insurance for emergency visits?
We take most PPO dental insurance and will go over your coverage with you. If you're uninsured, we have a Self-Care Savings Plan and can discuss payment arrangements.
12) What can I do right now for pain?
A cold compress outside the jaw can help with swelling. Don't bite down on the sore tooth. Call us and describe what's happening—we're near Springfield, OH and will help you figure out next steps.
