Teeth Whitening with Custom Trays

Home Care Instructions

Please follow these instructions carefully to achieve the best whitening results while minimizing sensitivity.

Before You Begin

Do NOT whiten:

  • During the first 2 weeks after starting orthodontic aligners
  • For 2 days after switching to a new aligner set

Whitening may temporarily increase tooth sensitivity.

How to Use Your Whitening Trays

1. Clean the Tray

  • Rinse the tray with cool water.
  • Clean gently using a soft toothbrush and water.
  • Do not use toothpaste.

2. Apply the Whitening Gel

  • Place one thin, continuous line of gel along the lower half of the front (cheek side) of each tray.
  • Use ¼ to ⅓ of one syringe per arch.
  • Do not overfill.

3. Insert the Tray

  • Place the tray over your teeth.
  • Lightly tap to ensure it is fully seated.
  • Make sure the tray is completely engaged over any aligner buttons.

4. Wear Time

  • Wear the whitening trays for 8–10 hours overnight.
  • Do not eat, drink, or use tobacco while trays are in place.

5. Remove Excess Gel

  • After inserting trays, remove any excess gel from the gums using a soft toothbrush or clean finger.
  • Do not swallow excess gel.

6. After Whitening

  • Remove trays in the morning.
  • Rinse your mouth thoroughly.
  • Clean trays with a soft toothbrush and water.
  • Store trays in a clean, dry case.

What to Expect

  • Mild tooth or gum sensitivity is common and usually temporary.
  • White spots on teeth may appear during whitening and often blend with continued use.
  • Teeth may re-stain over time — touch-up treatments may be needed.
  • Dental fillings, crowns, or other restorations will not whiten.

Safety & Precautions

  • Avoid contact with eyes.
  • Avoid prolonged contact of gel with gums or lips.
  • Small amounts of gel may be swallowed accidentally — this is normal.
  • Stop whitening and contact your dental provider if:
    • Sensitivity becomes severe
    • Gum or tissue irritation does not improve
    • You experience an allergic reaction
  • ⚠️ Do NOT use whitening products if you are pregnant or nursing.

Important Reminders

  • Inform your dentist that you are whitening before any dental treatment.
  • Patients with significant medical conditions should consult their physician before whitening.
  • Always keep whitening products out of reach of children.
  • Store gel away from heat and sunlight.
