Sinus Graft Surgery

Post-Operative Care Instructions

General oral surgery instructions still apply. The following additional precautions are extremely important to protect your sinus graft and ensure proper healing.

Sinus & Nose Care (Very Important)

  • Do NOT blow your nose for 1 week.
  • You may gently wipe your nose if needed.
  • If you must sneeze, sneeze with your mouth open to avoid pressure on the sinus area.

Pressure Precautions

  • Do NOT use straws, as suction can damage the graft.
  • Avoid any activity that creates pressure in your mouth or sinuses.
  • Do NOT pull or lift your lip to look at stitches — this can tear sutures and damage the graft.

Tobacco Use

  • Do NOT smoke or use smokeless tobacco.
  • Tobacco significantly delays healing and greatly increases the risk of graft failure.

Medications

  • Take all antibiotics exactly as prescribed and continue until finished.
  • If you feel congested, you may use an over-the-counter antihistamine as needed.
  • Take any other prescribed medications as directed.

Follow-Up Visit

  • You should return for a 1-week post-operative appointment.
  • This visit allows us to evaluate healing and determine when your next phase of treatment can begin.

Future Implant Placement

Dental implants are typically placed 3–6 months after a sinus graft, depending on healing and medical history.
