Post-Operative Care Instructions

Following these instructions will help reduce discomfort and promote healthy healing after your deep cleaning procedure.

Eating & Drinking

  • Avoid eating for at least 2 hours, or until the numbness has completely worn off.
  • For the next several days, avoid hard or crunchy foods such as:
  • Chips
  • Popcorn
  • Seeds

Rinsing

  • Rinse your mouth 2–3 times per day with warm salt water to soothe the gums and promote healing.
  • Mix:
  • 1 teaspoon of salt
  • 8 oz of warm water

Pain & Sensitivity

  • Mild soreness or sensitivity is normal.
  • Take ibuprofen (Advil) or Tylenol as needed, following label instructions.
  • Avoid aspirin unless directed by your dentist.

Brushing & Oral Care

  • Brush gently in treated areas for the first 24 hours.
  • Do not use an electric toothbrush on the first day.
  • After 24 hours, resume your normal brushing and flossing routine.
  • Use any prescribed mouth rinses as directed.

Smoking

  • Do not smoke for 24–48 hours after your procedure, as tobacco can delay healing.

When to Call the Office

  • Contact us if you experience:
  • Increasing pressure sensitivity
  • Swelling
  • Persistent or worsening discomfort
