Root Canal Treatment

Post-Operative Care Instructions

It is normal to experience mild soreness after a root canal. Following these instructions will help reduce pain and support healing.

Medication (Very Important)

To help prevent pain and swelling, follow this medication schedule even if you feel comfortable.

Recommended Schedule

Take _____ tablets of 200 mg ibuprofen (such as Advil or Motrin) every 6 hours
(usually 3–4 tablets — follow your doctor’s instructions)

Three hours after each ibuprofen dose, take:

  • 2 Extra-Strength Tylenol tablets

⚠️ Important

  • Do NOT take Tylenol at the same time as ibuprofen, wait a few hours
  • Follow this schedule for 72 hours after treatment.
  • Do not exceed recommended daily dosages.
  • If you cannot take these medications, follow your doctor’s alternative instructions.

Eating & Chewing

  • The treated tooth may be sore for a few days.
  • Eat soft foods and avoid chewing on the treated tooth.
  • Continue this until your final restoration is placed.

Final Treatment (Crown Placement)

Most teeth that have had a root canal need a permanent crown to prevent cracking or breaking.
