Post-Operative Care Instructions

Please follow these instructions carefully to help your mouth heal properly and avoid complications.

Bleeding Control

  • Bite firmly on the gauze for 1–2 hours.
  • Light blood-tinged saliva is normal for 1–2 days.
  • If heavy bleeding occurs:
    • Fold clean gauze into a firm pad and place it directly over the area.
    • Bite with steady pressure for 20 minutes.
    • A moist tea bag may be used instead of gauze to help clotting.

Protect the Surgical Area

  • Keep your fingers and tongue away from the surgical site.
  • Do not rinse your mouth for the first 24 hours.
  • Avoid spitting, smoking, suction, and straws for 72 hours, as these can disrupt healing.

Rinsing

    • Hot liquids (soup, tea, coffee) for 24 hours
    • Carbonated beverages
    • Drinks through a straw

Swelling & Bruising

  • Swelling and bruising are normal and usually peak 2 days after surgery.
  • Apply ice packs if needed:
    • 20 minutes on / 20 minutes off
    • Continue for the first 48 hours
  • Swelling should gradually improve over time.

Sutures (Stitches)
