Bone Graft Post-Operative Instructions

Following these instructions will help ensure proper healing of your bone graft. Please read carefully.

What to Expect

Your bone graft is made of small particles. It is normal to notice a few small granules in your mouth during the first several days. The area is intentionally overfilled, so losing a small amount of material does not affect healing.

Rinsing & Mouthwash

  • Do not rinse vigorously or spit for 3–5 days.
  • Do not use over-the-counter mouthwash during the healing process.
  • You may gently rinse with:
  • Warm salt water, or
  • A prescription mouthwash, if provided.
  • If you have a partial denture or flipper, remove and insert it carefully while healing.

Sutures (Stitches)

  • Most sutures are dissolvable and will dissolve within 7–10 days.
  • If they do not dissolve, they will be removed at your follow-up appointment.

Protect the Graft Site

  • Do not apply pressure to the area with your tongue or fingers.
  • Do not pull your lip or cheek to look at the site.
  • Do not poke or disturb the graft area, as this can damage healing tissue or loosen sutures.

Eating & Chewing

  • Avoid chewing hard or crunchy foods near the graft site.
  • Chew on the opposite side when possible.
  • Excessive pressure can disrupt the healing process.

Smoking & Alcohol

  • Avoid smoking and alcohol for at least 7 days after your procedure.
  • Smoking significantly increases the risk of graft failure and delayed healing.

Follow-Up Appointment

  • A follow-up visit is usually scheduled 1–2 weeks after your procedure.
  • This visit allows us to evaluate healing and plan the next phase of treatment.
