What Happens If You Ignore a Cavity?
Spoiler alert: it doesn’t just go away.
At Celebrate Smile Dental, we believe in catching dental issues early—because small problems are much easier (and cheaper) to fix than big ones. Cavities might start small, but ignoring them can lead to serious consequences.
Stage 1: A Tiny Spot
In the beginning, a cavity might just be a little discoloration or sensitivity. You might not even feel it yet—but decay is already starting to wear down your enamel.
Stage 2: Pain and Sensitivity
As the cavity grows, you may notice sharp pain when eating sweets or drinking hot or cold beverages. This means the decay has moved past your enamel into the more sensitive inner layers of your tooth.
Stage 3: Infection and Abscess
If untreated, the decay can reach the pulp (the nerve center of your tooth). At this point, you might develop a toothache, swelling, or even an infection called an abscess. This can cause serious pain and may require a root canal—or even extraction.
Stage 4: Higher Costs
The longer you wait, the more extensive the treatment becomes. What could have been a simple filling might turn into a root canal and crown, or worse, the need for a replacement tooth.
